2017 Jamestown Area Youth Lock-Out

Cold. Lonely. Hungry. Tired. Angry. Hurt. Hopeless. Homeless.
Every day in Stutsman County a child goes to sleep hungry. Every day in Stutsman County a man couch-surfs from friend to friend, to stave off the cold. Every day in Stutsman County an elderly person chooses between medicine and food. Every day in Stutsman County a parent cries because they cannot provide even the most basic of necessities for his/ her family.
So what are we to do? As caring and committed Christ followers, we are called to respond. In Luke 3:11, John is asked this very question: “Then what are we to do?” He responds, “If you have two coats, give one away and do the same with your food.” In Deuteronomy we are commanded, not asked, but commanded to do the same; to be generous, to be caring and to share what God has given.
The Youth of Trinity are inviting you to respond.

Chaperones, please be ready to experience, learn and grow
with your youth through this meaningful event!

The big idea of this is to get real, to feel what it’s like to be homeless…for just 24 hours.
We will sleep in cardboard boxes, fast for 24 hours, and just embrace the rain or shine.
Regardless of the weather we are doing this together.
The purpose is for us to come together, to start to understand
the poverty that is in our midst and to raise funds for

Region 6 Homeless Coalition and Community Action.

The day will start at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, with sign-in and games. We will have a full day of service to our community, speakers that share the poverty issue in our midst, some quiet Bible and reflection time and some fun games. There will be cardboard “house” making and music in the evening. Sunday we will break our fast together with breakfast in the Trinity Fellowship Hall and then attend worship together at 10:45. This part is optional, of course, but we really encourage you to stay, reflect on your experience and worship with us. The sermon of the day promises to be relevant to our event.

How to raise money

Families, sit down together and look at your monthly expenses.
What do you spend in one month on your mortgage or rent? Can you divide that by 30 and give that 24 hour portion?  What do you spend on food in a month? Divide it by 30. What do you spend on utilities, on fuel for your home and/ or vehicle, on proper clothing for the weather? Do you have cell phones, cable and internet? Divide the bills by 30. What does it cost you monthly to live your lifestyle?  Can you give 24 hours’ worth of your monthly living costs to help our neighbors in need? Every penny raised will go directly to Community Action and our area Homeless Coalition.
Ask grandparents, neighbors and friends to do the same. It doesn’t take long to look at your books and do a little math. Every bit counts and together, our large and small amounts can go a long, long way.
Example: House Note: $1000
                  Car Note:    $400
     Utilities and Gas:     $700
                     Food:       $600
            Miscellaneous:  $300
(cell phone, new coat, hotel in Fargo or Minneapolis, etc.)
TOTAL monthly expenses: $3000  (conservative, right?!)
Using this example, the 24 hour portion or 1/30 of the total is $100.
After examining your expenses, please pray about what you can give. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you!
Donations can be made in cash or by writing a check to Trinity Youth Lock-Out.
Every dollar donated goes to Community Action and Region 6 Homeless Coalition

Packing Information

What NOT to bring:
  • Luggage or any extra clothing. (Basically you can only wear what is on your back when you arrive.)
  • Electronic devices such as cell phones, mp3 players, CD players, handheld game systems, etc.
  • Toiletries (only contact solution is allowed – no toothbrush, deodorant, etc.)
  • Drugs/alcohol/tobacco/fireworks/firearms
  • Comfort items like sleeping pads, extra blankets, and pillows
  • Other luxuries that are not listed in the “what to bring” list below.
What to bring
  • Sleeping Bag (as warm as you can find)—this should be a mummy style sleeping bag, and
    not cotton!
  • Bible, journal, and pen
  • A Nalgene bottle or water bottle
  • Registration fee (if you didn't pay online) and fundraised dollars
  • A good attitude!

What to Wear

Layers of clothes (for cold and warm weather) that can be worn for sleep and play
  • Bottom Layer--long underwear
  • Middle Layer—wool or fleece for pants and top
  • Outer Layer—a shell to protect you from wind and rain

**These are minimums that you MUST have!
  • Warm socks—wool is the best!
  • Tennis shoes that are good for walking

In simple terms, you can only bring the clothes on your back and a sleeping bag. NO luxury items—we want you to embody what a person who is homeless struggles with for even one day. Be willing to give up your cell phones, electronics, toothbrushes, and pillow for just one day!

Tips for Fasting

Going 24 hours without food can be difficult. Here are a few tips from our friends that host a Homeless and Hungry event in Fargo.

  1. Prepare your mind – whether this is your first fast or your fifth, fasting can be very difficult. Most of the battle is just a mental one! Remember to keep your spirits up, and remind yourself why we’re doing this: to experience empathy and to understand what other people go through.
  2. Drink water – water is going to be SO important during this event. We really do not want anyone to be dehydrated, so please make sure you are drinking your water!
  3. Listen to your body – there is a difference between being hungry and a little tired, and being very sick. If you think that you are getting ill, let your group leader know ASAP so we can make sure to monitor you.
  4. Be prepared – along with being hungry, you will probably be tired. You may get annoyed easily. You may be emotional. Be aware that these things can happen, so that when they do you are not surprised, and you can remember to practice kindness, show grace, and give love to those around you.
  5. Pray – use the times that you feel hunger as a reminder to talk to God. Ask Him to watch over you, but also to watch over all of the people who experience this kind of hunger on a daily basis.
